Every year on June 21, people gather across the country to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, with ceremonies, music, dancing, and food. The day honours the culture and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. Indigenous communities host events showcasing traditional practices and stories passed down from one generation to the next, and the day is a chance for people to see what it’s like in Indigenous communities. While Canada marks other important memorial days centered on Indigenous people, such as Red Dress Day and Orange Shirt Day, they tend to focus on the losses the community has experienced. Indigenous Peoples Day focuses on joy and celebration, and the beautiful rich heritage of Indigenous Peoples within our Canadian and American diaspora. It’s also about ‘community’ and recognizing what’s great about all of our communities – joining with our First Nations, Métis and Inuit brethren, and having that chance to come together and celebrate our history, our past, our future and our future generations. In Canada, the day was first recognized in 1990, eight years after the Assembly of First Nations initially recommended it become “National Aboriginal Solidarity Day.” The date, June 21, also commemorates the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and symbolically, a new season of life. Join NPL Canada to celebrate this special day, highlighting Indigenous joy, history, art, culture from across Canada on June 21, and throughout the year; and the unique heritage, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Turtle Island. #NIPD23 See MoreSee Less
